Bringing Art to Activism: The Work of Kill Joy

In a world where art and activism often collide, one creative force stands out against the backdrop of growing tensions along the U.S.-Mexico border. Kill Joy, an artistic puppeteer rooted in social justice, has crafted a production that challenges the narrative surrounding border militarization. As part of ACLU Texas’s artist-in-residence program, she and her Kitchen Table puppet collective are using performance art as a medium to share visceral stories about the realities faced by communities intertwined with the border.

Giant Puppets and Community Collaboration

The show, aptly titled “Recipes of Resistance/Recetas de Resistencia,” is more than a collection of puppets; it's a tapestry woven from local voices and experiences. Kill Joy's background as a daughter of Filipino immigrants informs her passion for community-based performances. With contributions from locals, Kill Joy has created giant puppets and other artistic elements that reflect the vibrancy and struggles of those living near the border. "Community groups at Brownsville and El Paso wanted to express the daily life at the militarized borderlands," she explains, highlighting the connection between the puppets and the people they represent.

However, bringing this message to life hasn’t come without challenges. Initially intended for towns along the border, the performances have been relocated to larger cities. This change was not just logistical; it was a necessity driven by safety concerns. Kill Joy, who prefers to keep her identity somewhat cloaked, explains, "We had to change our plans due to fears of retaliation from right-wing groups and the government… Our safety is as paramount as our message. The larger cities may be disconnected from the realities of those at the border, but they can still reach a wider audience with our story.”

Engaging with the Audience

The puppets featured in the show are designed to provoke thought and discussion. For example, one puppet in the form of a car wash monster serves as a commentary on the excessive resource consumption seen in places like El Paso, where the proliferation of car wash businesses has an environmental impact. By using humor and creativity, Kill Joy seeks to engage her audience in complex discussions about the intersection of industry, environment, and social justice.

Creating Awareness: Recipes of Resistance

Presenting the performance free of charge and in both English and Spanish, with live sign language interpretation, the collective aims to ensure accessibility and inclusion. “Recipes” follows five fictional friends navigating the harsh realities of militarization, representing a composite of real stories unfolding across the border regions. This storytelling approach invites audiences to empathize and understand, fostering a dialogue influenced by both art and reality.
