Celebrating Courage: Youth Camp Counselors Recognized
The State Fair of Texas, a cherished institution full of celebration and community spirit, recently honored the courageous actions of youth camp counselors from Central Texas with the 2025 Pride of Texas Award. Presented during the Fair’s opening ceremony, this accolade recognizes the selflessness and bravery exhibited by these young leaders during the catastrophic floods that struck the Guadalupe River area on July 4.
The award serves as a reminder of the enduring Texas qualities of resilience and generosity. Counselors, including 19-year-old Ainslie Bashara from Camp Mystic, exemplified these traits when they risked their own lives to ensure the safety of their campers as the floodwaters rose. Ainslie's quick thinking and bravery led to the successful evacuation of 16 young girls through a cabin window, showcasing that true leadership often rises in times of crisis.
A Community Coming Together Amidst Tragedy
As the camp counselors were honored, the shadows of the tragedy that befell the region remained present. Mitchell Glieber, the State Fair President, poignantly noted the significance of the award, stating, “While we honor these young leaders’ heroism, we also remember the lives lost during the floods throughout Central Texas.” To honor those who did not make it home, green ribbons have been tied to trees around the fairgrounds, creating a poignant reminder of loss amid celebration.
Uniting in Courage: The Spirit of the State Fair
At a festival known for its joyous celebrations, the recognition of these counselors aligns perfectly with the Fair’s mission of bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds. This year's Proudest of Texas Award reinforces the Fair's dedication not only to festivity but also to honoring resilience in the face of natural disasters. It positions the Summer Camp counselors as symbols of hope and strength, proving that even amidst chaos, the community can stand strong together.
The State Fair of Texas will run from September 26 to October 19, welcoming millions of guests who can experience the celebration and remembrance embedded in this year’s theme of pride and community spirit. By engaging with each other through shared experiences and honors, attendees can continue to build connections that strengthen the fabric of the Texas community.
