This juxtaposition comes sharply into focus when considering families who find themselves in shelters, away from the comforts of home. For three years now, our family has partaken in a heartwarming project: decorating the Family Promise Shelter, a former La Quinta hotel that provides a safe haven for families in need. As we set out to make this space festive, I couldn't help but reflect on the mothers residing there, especially during such a significant time of year.
The Power of Decoration to Transform Spaces
Every year, our group grows: this time, we had twelve children joining us to help add some holiday sparkle to the shelter. With the priority of making the shelter feel festive yet respectful, we not only created memorable decorations, but also cultivated empathy and teamwork among young learners. This year’s theme revolved around a winter wonderland, easy-to-manage crafts, and touches that echoed the spirit of giving.
Creative Solutions for a Festive Transformation
The shelter's operations manager imposed some constraints: no modifications to the walls were allowed. Instead, we got inventive, decorating windows with colorful paper chains and custom window paints that children could fill in and express their creativity. These projects were simple enough for kids of all ages and created a high-impact aesthetic while respecting the shelter's guidelines.
