DQ’s Blizzard: A Culinary Icon Turns 40
This summer marks an exciting milestone for DQ® restaurants across Texas—the 40th anniversary of the Blizzard® Treat. Introduced in 1985, this creamy delight has become more than just a dessert; it is a staple of Texan culture, encapsulating joy and nostalgia for generations of ice cream enthusiasts.
The Story Behind the Blizzard
The Blizzard’s invention is credited to Samuel Temperato, a DQ franchisee who sought to bring a delightful frozen treat to the masses. In its first year alone, more than 100 million Blizzard Treats were sold, establishing the product as an instant success. Over the decades, DQ has introduced more than 170 unique flavors, showcasing their creativity and adaptability to customer preferences.
Summer Flavors to Celebrate
This summer, DQ is rolling out a fresh lineup of delightful flavors to celebrate this special anniversary. Among the 2025 offerings are:
- S’mores Blizzard Treat
- Cotton Candy Blizzard Treat
- Confetti Cake Blizzard Treat
- NEW! Dipped Strawberry Cheesecake Blizzard Treat
- NEW! Mixing Bowl Mashup Blizzard Treat
Each of these treats not only brings enjoyment but continues the tradition of community engagement through partnerships with organizations like Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. On July 31, every Blizzard sold will donate $1 or more to support children’s health initiatives—a perfect blend of indulgence and giving back.
What This Means for Dallas-Fort Worth Residents
Dairy Queen's commitment to the local community resonates with homeowners in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, creating connections over a shared love for delicious treats. This anniversary is not just a celebration of ice cream; it strengthens community bonds as DQ serves as a gathering spot for families, friends, and neighbors. Visiting your local DQ this summer can be a great way to engage with the community while enjoying something sweet.
As the Texas Dairy Queen Operators’ Council CEO Lou Romanus aptly puts it, “It’s more than a treat, it’s part of our culture.” Celebrate the Blizzard, a hallmark of Texas summertime, and test out the new flavors while supporting a noble cause!
