A Lifelong Journey in Art
Arriving in Arlington during the vibrant 1960s, Bill's journey began with a career in aerospace at Lockheed Martin. Yet, it was his passion for art that truly defined him. Throughout his life, Bill sought out opportunities to create, learn, and be part of the artistic fabric of every community he lived in. From attending art classes to frequenting local galleries, his enthusiasm for creativity was evident to all who knew him.
Founding the Arlington Museum of Art
In the 1980s, Bill played a pivotal role in establishing the Arlington Museum of Art. As president on two occasions, he poured his heart into making the museum a welcoming space for artists and art lovers alike. Current president Chris Hightower recalls that Bill's encouragement helped ease the transitions the museum faced over the years, especially during its relocations. “His consistent support meant a lot to all of us,” Hightower stated. “He was always results-driven and believed in collaboration.”
Mentorship and Community Spirit
Bill Barter was not just an artist; he was a mentor and source of inspiration within the Fort Worth Art Collective. Bernardo Vallarino, lead coordinator of the collective, remarked on Bill’s role: “He taught us all what it means to truly be an artist, not just in terms of output, but also in spirit and community engagement.” His legacy of mentorship is evident in the collaborative projects and exhibitions that define the collective today.
Lasting Legacy of Artistic Commitment
Even in his final days, Bill’s dedication to the arts was unwavering. He continued to create until hospice care became necessary, affirming his lifetime passion. His last artwork, The N Game, is currently displayed in a collective exhibition at the Arlington Museum of Art. Organizers ensured that he had a presence in the show, highlighting the profound impact he had on the collective by placing a ceremonial wreath in front of his piece to honor his contributions.
A Measure of Community Impact
Barter's contributions extend beyond the canvas. His unwavering support for local artists created a nurturing platform where creativity thrived, community connections blossomed, and art became accessible to all—an ethos central to the mission of the Arlington Museum of Art.
