In the heart of Euless, Texas, a remarkable project is unfolding high above the altar of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. Ukrainian artist Vladimir Grygorenko is pouring his heart and soul into painting a breathtaking representation of Christ's ascension inside the church’s dome. With Easter approaching, his mission is to complete this sacred iconography by Pascha, ensuring that the artwork resonates not only with the congregation but also with anyone who steps into this sacred space.
A Personal Journey to Faith and Art
Born in Ukraine in 1965, Grygorenko’s path to becoming an iconographer has been anything but ordinary. Growing up under the Soviet regime, he wasn’t raised in a religious environment. Yet, through his studies in mechanical engineering, he encountered the beauty of Byzantine-style religious art, which sparked an awakening of faith within him. Baptized in 1991, he transformed his engineering expertise into artistic endeavors, meticulously creating depictions of holy events and figures.
The Artistry Behind Iconography
Grygorenko, while working 65 feet above the ground, finds joy and fulfillment in his craft. As he meticulously applies silica paint to canvas, he aims to create an iconic narrative filled with divine symbolism. His current project represents the first phase, wherein Christ ascends surrounded by Theotokos (Mary), angels, and the apostles. In later phases, he will bring to life the four evangelists in the church's architecture, inviting the faithful to engage deeper with the stories of their tradition.
